N.J. electric company seeks rate hike after summer when customers saw unexpectedly high bills

Atlantic City Electric, the utility company that powers millions of homes and businesses in South Jersey, wants to raise rates on its electricity to improve its energy-delivering capabilities and limit outage frequencies, according to company officials.
The provider filed a rate increase request on Nov. 21 with the New Jersey Board of Public seeking to use the funds to pay for $109 million in infrastructure work.
Should the increase get approved, the typical residential customer using 643 kilowatt hours of electricity per month would see a monthly bill increase of 8%, or about $12.96, Atlantic City Electric said.
